Admission Tests: SAT, ACT & SSAT

The tests elite schools and universities use to compare applicants worldwide — and how AIGA students prepare to stand out.

Why these tests matter to elite schools

Selective universities and boarding schools receive applications from students with wildly different grading systems, curricula, and grade inflation standards. A standardized score is the one number they can compare fairly across every applicant, from every country — it signals readiness independent of where a student went to school.

SAT

The most widely recognized US college admissions test, scored out of 1600 across Reading & Writing and Math. Most competitive US universities use SAT scores to compare applicants against a common academic baseline.

Best for: broad US university admissions

ACT

A curriculum-based alternative to the SAT, scored 1–36, adding a Science reasoning section. Many students score better on the ACT's more straightforward question style — universities accept either test equally.

Best for: students strong in science reasoning & pacing

SSAT

The gateway exam for admission to competitive private and boarding secondary schools. Elite schools use it to identify students ready for a rigorous, fast-paced academic environment well before university.

Best for: entry to selective secondary schools

What elite schools look for

Consistency across sections — not just a high overall score, but balanced performance.
Scores near or above a school's published middle 50% range.
Evidence of timed, high-pressure performance — a preview of exam conditions at the next level.
A score that supports — and doesn't undercut — a strong transcript and essays.
